The technological acronym for "What you see is what you get" seems harmless and even true. The fact of the matter is it is contrary to the way a Jew should look at the events that happen around him and in the world at large. We live in a time where the "boss" is truly hiding from us. The master puppeteer is pulling the strings and we children think that the puppets are actually living, breathing, independent individuals who can affect what takes place in our lives and in the politics of the world.
More times than not, when something happens-- an accident-- a sickness-- a victory-- a defeat-- we are quick to analyze the causes of the event. What we see makes us believe that we understand exactly the way events followed one another leading to the result. The story of Yosef and his brothers, the Purim story and the events that lead up to the Jewish salvation are classic examples of --"wysipi"-- "what you see is probably incorrect." Our Sages teach that even the mighty Nebuchadnezar and his armies were not the destroyers of the Bet HaMikdash-- the sins of the Jews brought the destruction.
The lesson to be learned is not to accept things at face value. Try and internalize that the eyes don't reveal--they conceal the true reality of any given situation. First impressions are usually wrong.
Today when you see something happen--stop. Don't jump to conclusions. Ask, analyze, question and THINK of all the possibilities--reasonable and unreasonable--physical and spiritual--that could make it happen. It may take more than a minute but it will lead you away from quick errors into deliberate, correct conclusions.
CONSIDER THIS FOR A MINUTE
The way a person behaves dictates the way he is treated by Heaven. If his manner is to kind, forgiving and compassionate to others Hashem will behave similarly in regard to him. Shemirat haLashon, Shaar haZechirah, Chapter2
