If a person is not careful to eat a balanced diet the danger exists of one developing deficiencies. Vitamin and mineral deficiencies manifest themselves in a variety of ways including weak bones, poor night vision, and scurvy and hair loss. A doctor or nutritionist can diagnose the problem and prescribe the doses needed to fulfill the body’s requirements. Soon after changing one's diet and taking the required supplements one finds that the symptoms disappear and one returns to full health once again.
Unbeknownst to many is the fact that the soul also requires a minimum of basic spiritual nutrients in order to function properly. The list is made up of the various commandments of the Torah and of its study. One who has a balanced diet of service to G-d and acts of kindness to others feels spiritually healthy resulting in a sense of happiness and satisfaction. The problem is that one who does need get enough spiritual nutrients suffers from a symptom called discontent. Since one cannot go to a doctor or nutritionist to establish a curative diet of the soul one often tries quick fixes. A woman might go shopping or out to a restaurant. A man may go to the gym or gamble. A teen may drive at dangerously high speeds or even turn to drugs. Each is trying to feed the discontent with a pleasure.
But there is a big difference between happiness and pleasure. Pleasure is a physical enjoyment of one of the many delightful and exciting things with which Hashem filled His creation. One may and should enjoy them. However, one should not confuse the momentary "up" of any of these pleasures with happiness. Happiness is a spiritual feeling felt when one does something that brings one closer to his or her ultimate purpose. In the world of the spirit pleasure and satisfaction result when one does something that brings one closer to Hashem. Feeding this need cannot be done with physical items of joy and pleasure. Only vitamins of the soul - Torah and mitzvot – can yield the fulfillment of the deficiency. The next time you suffer from discontent try a test and you will see the truth of this concept.

CONSIDER THIS FOR A MINUTE

Even before birth parents begin to shower an offspring with caring and kindness over and above basic needs. One, therefore, lacks appreciation of all that they do. Hashem gave you parents and commanded you to fear and respect them so that you would not take them for granted. He, who gives you much more - constantly – deserves your appreciation as well.
