Professionals have always held a special place of esteem in the workplace. Mothers have always been proud to announce the success of her son the lawyer or the doctor. Although the Gemara expresses its opinions on those two professional pursuits -- it is the accountant who gets special praise from our sages. The “Ba-alay Cheshbonot” - the masters of calculation - are the ones our Sages praise as the ones most likely to succeed in the pursuit of a fine place in Olam Ha Bah.

The crux of their opinion is that one who reviews and evaluates ones actions today with a critical eye towards improvement will have a better day tomorrow and the next day also. When one spots a problem in one’s business one corrects and implements systems and procedures to insure a better operation in the future. One who sees a negative result from one’s discipline of one’s offspring develops a new approach for future reprimands. Constant review and ever-changing procedures yield positive growth. The first step – however – is evaluation of past performance.

How did you do yesterday? If you did not take the time to measure then you don’t know the answer to this all-important query. So today make yourself a silent promise. Tonight before retiring for the night I will be an accountant of the soul. I will evaluate my speech and my deeds. I will review my treatment of others – especially my spouse. I will see how I did and work on doing better tomorrow. A regular routine as a spiritual accountant will insure growth and progress in self-improvement – Certified!

DID YOU KNOW THAT

One who speaks Lashon Ha Ra violates the positive commandment to “Love one’s neighbor as oneself”. One who speaks negatively about another or who accepts comments, which are derogatory about another, demonstrates a lack of love and respect for that person. This applies whether or not the statement is true.

A truly happy person does not allow his happiness to be affected by external factors over which he has no control..
