Jonathan was a young man who loved his nightly Torah class.  He always tried to arrange his schedule so as not to conflict with his regular learning routine. Every morning he excitedly spoke to his friend Ruben about what had learned the night before.  His intention was to convince his good friend to join him in this nightly study session. Rubén however, politely refused often with the claim of being “just too tired”.

“I don’t understand,” Jonathan said, “it seems like we are involved in social activities or shopping you can stay awake as late as is necessary and be lively to the last moment.”

“You are right”, Rubin admitted, “but when I go to class is just the fact that I can’t keep my eyes open and end up sleeping almost immediately.”

You may have noticed that you also suffer from Ruben’s inability to stay awake. When Esav retuned from the fields the Torah points out that he was tired. The Torah comes to teach us that the feeling of tiredness that some times overtakes a person doesn’t necessarily result from hard work or physical exhaustion.  The lesson is that your energy level is connected to your desire.  The more one wants to do something, the more energy, one has to do it.  A person may arise bright and early in the morning to catch a plane to go on vacation and be full of enthusiasm and excitement even before Dawn.  However, that same person, who might need to wake up and go to synagogue, will find it difficult to arise from the bed and get dressed.  The difference is not based on how tired the person is instead it is rooted in how much the person wants to do the upcoming activity.  We all must train ourselves to work hard to learn the real value of all our activities and place them in priorities order.  If we do so the limited time, we have down here on Earth will be spent productively producing minutes spent in the service of our Maker.  The immeasurable reward available for such activity should be enough to excite you to perform.  If that doesn’t work, perhaps you may do it just out of love for the One who provides all of your needs and all of your pleasures.
